Overview

The establishment and nurturing of technology based enterprises in academic and research organizations are often attractive to policy makers because of their higher potential in creating dynamic market economies and jobs. As there is rapid development in scientific findings and new technologies in the R&D organizations, Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, took the initiative of providing incubation facilities for new entrepreneurs to transfer their new innovative technologies having high impact to the market. Such initiatives are now known by the common name of Technology Business Incubator (TBI), some of which are focused on developing innovative technologies, technology transfer and commercialization of technology. 

The technology business incubator at University of Hyderabad was sanctioned in the year 2006 by National Science & Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB) of the Department of Science & Technology (DST). TBI at UoH is a joint program by university of Hyderabad and Department of Science and technology (DST) and TBI@UoH registered as a society on March 10’2008.

Thrust areas

    TBI-UoH program concentrated on Pharma, Biotechnology and Renewable energy domains.

Objective

TBI-UoH is dedicated to Pharma, Biotech and Renewable energy industries. The main objective of TBI at UoH is to

  • Promote and accelerate the successful development of entrepreneurial Technology based Small Enterprises (TBSEs) in selected thrust areas such as pharma Biotechnology and Renewable energy through an array of business support resources, expertise, facilities and other infra-structure available in the University.
  • Develop graduates from TBI @ UoH who would be capable of contributing to the advancement of chemical and Pharma biotechnology.
  • Concentrates on providing opportunities for product development, commercialization, new business model, foster local development and employment of highly skilled graduates.

The incubation model at University of Hyderabad has been adopted to meet a variety of needs, from fostering commercialization of university/institution technologies to generation of employment. The incubator facility at UoH has the provision of providing the infrastructure, survival and growth which are the major challenges for the startups and innovators to develop and to stay in a strategic and good entrepreneurial climate.

Training program in Entrepreneurship Development 

The Technology Business Incubators (TBI/TIDE) at University of Hyderabad (UoH), in association with The Entrepreneur Zone (TEZ), have entered into an association to jointly offer an innovative 6-month Training program in Entrepreneurship Development. The Vice Chancellor incharge of UoH, Prof. R. P. Sharma inaugurated the program and said that he looked forward to a lot of entrepreneurial activity emanating from the campus through this program. Prof. Rajaram, coordinator TIDE and Prof. Venkata Ramanna, coordinator TBI, who were instrumental in getting this industry-academia collaboration, were upbeat about this program. They felt that while universities are powerhouses of research and innovation, yet an industrial interface is required to translate this into viable commercial technologies and businesses. Dr. Nandita Sethi, Director of TEZ, said that the program intends to provide a complete eco-system for nurturing and incubating entrepreneurial plans and supporting them from idea to start-up. The program includes training sessions and incubation. The training module is completely focussed on how to start up and run the business and the incubation provides entrepreneur mentoring, industry tie-ups/internships for prototyping, professional consultancy and facilitating investor funding through business-plan pitching. The program is also relevant for those joining family business and those working closely with entrepreneurs. Those who wish to start a business or join family business, can walk in with a business idea and work towards their venture. The program is subsidised for UoH students and alumni. The admissions are open and the last date for applying is 30th July, 2015.
