School of Medical Sciences

The School of Medical Sciences was established with a mission to “Promote, Nurture and Achieve excellence” in frontier areas of Medical and Health Sciences by offering novel teaching and research programs. The School has a School Board which has eminent biomedical scientists from India as its members. The School collaborates with the School of Life Sciences, School of Management Sciences, School of Social Sciences, School of Economics, SN School of Communication and Performing Arts, and Centers of the University involved in Health Sciences research. The School has access to State-of- the art research infrastructural facilities of the Schools and Centers of the University. The School of Medical Sciences has several Adjunct, Joint and Visiting Faculty from the University and other Institutes who actively participate in the multi-disciplinary teaching and research programs. The School has established academic and research partnership with reputed Institutes recognized by the University like LV Prasad Eye Institute, Indian Institute of Public Health/ Public Health Foundation of India, and several state and central government hospitals. The School has also established memorandum of understandings (MoU) with University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), Little Rock, Arkansas, USA, Public Health Foundation of India/Indian Institute of Public Health, Hyderabad and George Institute for Global Health for academic and research activities.

The school has been able to receive support from various grants from funding agencies like ICMR, Erasmus Plus grant (OCULUS) by European Union, UKIERI under UGC grant, UPE 2 grant and from Department of biotechnology, G.O.I.

I.  Infrastructure:

The school is well equipped with various labs which include Contact Lens lab, Refraction lab, Low vision Lab, Binocular vision Lab. Each lab has modern equipment to train the students in different aspects of primary eye care.

The school has three central facilities for biomedical research and two functional research laboratories that focusses on Cancer Biology, Tissue regeneration, Hypertension and Pre-eclampsia. Core laboratory I is equipped with instruments such as Thermocycler, Gel documentation System, Deep Freezers, Electrophoretic and Western Blot units, Shaker Incubator, Homogenizer and Autoclave. The Histopathology Core laboratoryis well equipped with microtome, tissue processing unit, slide warmer, water bath, laminar flow hood, hot air oven, Stereozoom and bright field microscopes; and digital balance. The Cell culture core facility is equipped with a laminar flow hood, CO2 Incubator, Inverted Fluorescence Microscope with digital imaging for performing sterile cell culture based experiments. The research facility also has an established set-up for performing small animal based experiments for in-vivo model development.

A dedicated Public health computer lab to aid the masters in public health and Ph.D program in the School has been in the making at the old Deans Office, School of Medical Sciences facility through the support of the Plan grant to the school. 40 PC’s, dedicated UPS and furniture has already been procured. Proprietary software needed for the students and scholars shall be procured once the facility is operational soon.

II.  Programmes of Studies:

1. Integrated Master of Science in Optometry and Vision Sciences: 5-year Integrated M.Sc. course is designed to train the students in different aspects of optometry and vision science and is backed up with extensive practical skills and clinical internship. The clinical training is offered in LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, Aravind Eye Hospital, Mehdipatnam, Hyderabad.

Eligibility for the Master of Science in Optometry and Vision Sciences:

The eligibility for admission to the course is based on a written test. The written test paper based on XII Board syllabus will have a total of 100 objective type questions in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.

2. Master in Public Health:

Public Health is an inter-disciplinary entity that promotes and practices a holistic concept of health with a mission of protecting health and saving lives of millions of people at a time. Public health encompasses the domains extending from life sciences, social and management sciences, engineering to medical and health sciences. As the saying goes “Science discovers, Technology develops and Public Health delivers”, the School of Medical Sciences of the UoH embarked on completing the cycle by an innovative approach – the Master in Public Health program.  It is trying to ensure that  the “bench to bedside to brass-tacks” competencies are developed  through this programme.

The Master of Public Health, a two year interdisciplinary program, is offered by School of Medical Sciences in collaboration with other Schools within University of Hyderabad  (School of Social Sciences, School of Management students, School of Economics, S N School of Performing Arts, Fine Arts & Communication)  and conjointly with  Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH)-Hyderabad. The course is innovatively structured to have core courses, tracks and electives that student can pursue to complete the MPH program with a choice based credit system framework. The major objectives of the MPH program of UoH are as follows:

  • Prepare professionals to work in public health in socially, culturally and economically diverse populations by being attentive to needs of vulnerable and disadvantaged groups.
  • Promote public health research in institutional and field settings
  • Train personnel in program organization and management, problem solving, and critical thinking in the public health domain;
  • Promote qualities of leadership among public health professionals and effectively use communication skills for health advocacy.
  • Train professionals for teaching /training posts in public health institutions.

Eligibility for applying for MPH:

Bachelor’s degree in Medicine, dentistry, Ayurvedic medicine, homeopathy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, nursing, nutrition, pharmacology, veterinary sciences, agricultural sciences, social sciences or any other science degree.

Seats: 40:  Regular -30; Sponsored- 10.


Regular Candidates (30):  Selection procedure for regular students is through annual entrance examination of the University of Hyderabad.   The written test paper would be based on Bachelors degree syllabus in public health and allied specialties and will have a total of 100 objective type questions basic medical and social Sciences.

Sponsored Candidates (10): Selection procedure for sponsored candidates will be based on the Merits of the application, Statement of purpose, and Interview performance.

The  sponsored candidates should  submit their applications through proper channel to the Controller of Examination, University of Hyderabad, on the date mentioned in the prospectus of the course year. The date of interview would be  as per the Schedule mentioned  in the Prospectus.

Sponsorship criteria: As per existing UoH criteria. More specifically for the MPH programme.

Candidates may apply under the sponsored category if they fulfill the following criteria, in addition to having the required minimum educational qualifications:

  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in a public, private or non-governmental organization in a role related to public health.
  • An undertaking from the employer certifying that the candidate, if admitted, would be given the necessary leave and financial support to complete the degree.

Applications in this category must be forwarded through the employer and endorsed by the relevant authority in that organization.

Sponsorship Fee: The sponsored candidate has to pay Rs. 1,00,000 per year, in additionto the University fees prescribed in the Prospectus 2018-19.

3.  Ph.D.  Health Sciences:

The School of Medical Sciences pursuant to the recommendations of the academic council early 2017 has initiated a Ph.D Program in Health Sciences from Semester July 2017.

There are Nine seats of Ph.D in Health Sciences: Public Health (2), Optometry & Vision Sciences (3), Nursing (2) and Bio-medical Sciences (2) that were offered. 126 applicants registered for the program and interviews were held as per the new UGC regulations of July 2016. 7 seats were filled in July 2017 and 1 in Jan. 2018.

The School proposes to have an intake upto nine students in the ensuring year. Candidates interested in applying for the Ph.D. (full-time) programme during the academic year 2018-19 should refer to the University’s advertisement in national dailies in March/ April, 2018, and the University’s website.
