Focus on internationalising UoH

University Of Hyderabad accords a high priority to the internationalization of its teaching and research programs.

The University has been accepting students from various countries, including Iran, Myanmar, Thailand, Mongolia, Syria, Tanzania, Yemen, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Philippines, Ethiopia, South Africa, Guyana, Uzbekistan and Japan.

The Study in India Program (SIP) attracts hundreds of students from Europe and North America for short-term courses. The University is witnessing unprecedented visibility at the international level, with several top institutions of the world coming forward to enter into academic partnerships. Attempts are being made to undertake joint research and teaching projects that allow credit transfers and grant of joint degrees to students, in areas of mutual benefit.

The Office of International Affairs coordinates the University’s international collaborations in close contact with the university leadership, various faculties and departments. The office is responsible for the University’s bilateral agreements and participation in networks and organizations.

Admission Requirements

Definition:
For the purposes of admission to the UoH, the term “Foreign National” implies any candidate holding a passport of a foreign country. 1 This category would include any Person of Indian Origin (PIO) or, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder who has a foreign country’s passport.

Number of seats: 
As per existing guidelines, Foreign Nationals will be admitted over and above the approved intake in a course up to a maximum of 15% of the approved intake in each course, depending upon the availability of adequate infrastructure. All the available seats may not be filled in a particular year if a subject’s Admission Committee does not recommend anyone or if a program has inadequate infrastructure. Foreign nationals seeking admission through ICCR or other governmental agencies may apply to the University in the prescribed form through the respective bodies. Eligibility: 
a)   Applications:  The University may consider the admission of foreign nationals, “in absentia”, on the basis of their desire “to be considered in absentia.2 Their admission under the 15% bracket for International Student, to any programme, is subject to the condition that they are found suitable for admission by the Admissions Committee of the Centre/Department/School. 

b)  Academic qualification: A prospective Foreign National has to fulfil the eligibility conditions, including the required qualifying degree and marks/grades, as prescribed for Indian students. These conditions can be found in the prospectus which is available on the University website (www.uohyd.ac.in or www.acad.uohyd.ac.in). In case a student’s parent University does not have a program which is prescribed as minimum eligibility condition, equivalent program may be considered. In this respect the Admission Committee’s decision is final.

      1  NRI’s with Indian Passport are Indian Nationals and therefore, cannot be considered as International Students.

      2  Foreign Nationals whose qualifying degree is from India and who are resident in India at the time of application, 
          in order to be considered for admission into any program/course should take some part of the entrance examination in the form of                  Interviews in the University as prescribed by the Centre/ Department/School.

c)  English proficiency: Proficiency in English is a pre-condition for admission of foreign nationals. It is mandatory that all Foreign Nationals should provide one of the following two scores. The score should not be older than two years. International English Language Testing System (IELTS)—Academic version—minimum score of 6.5 is required; Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL)—paper-based TOEFL: a minimum score of 560 is required; Computer-based TOEFL: a minimum score of 220 is required; internet-based TOEFL: a minimum score of 80 is required.

Applications should be accompanied by copies of relevant certificates, marks sheets together with the English version of such copies duly attested, if they are in a different language. All foreign nationals seeking admission to the University will be required to produce a medical certificate of fitness from a recognized hospital in their country. Those offered admission may also be required to undergo a comprehensive medical examination as prescribed by the University. 

Deadline for application:
Foreign Nationals may apply for admission any time during the year. However, the deadline for being considered for any academic year (which generally begins in mid-July) is April 15 of that year. The decision of the Admissions Committee will be intimated to the candidates before the first week of June.

Additional requirements for Computer Sciences: 

M.Tech: 

International Students seeking admission to M.Tech. (CS/AI/IT) program are exempted from the GATE qualification.  

Ph.D: 

  1. GRE score is to be submitted at the time of  application;
  2. International Students residing in India have to appear for an Interview. 

Additional requirements for M.Tech. Bioinformatics, Integrated Ph.D. Biotechnology and Ph.D. Biotechnology programs

1.  International Students should have a GRE score:

       a.  Verbal Reasoning score, at least 500;

       b.  Quantitative Reasoning score, at least 500;             

       c.  an Analytical Writing score, at least 4;

       d.  Subject score with at least 600 and sub-score in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, at least 60 

 2.    a.   If the International Student is available in India he/she will be required to appear for an interview.

        b.   Letters of recommendation should clearly mention the knowledge of candidate in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics.

Documents to be submitted at the time of Application: 

      a.  Application form which can be downloaded from the University website: CLICK HERE
      b.  transcripts from High School onwards with certified English translation, if the documents are in any other language;3
      c.  two letters of recommendation from their present teachers in sealed envelopes directly to the Controller      
           of Examinations office.
      d.  TOEFL/IELTS/GRE scorecards;
      e.  research proposal (in case of M.Phil./Ph.D. admission);
      f.  proof of adequate financial support or scholarship.

          the Admissions Committee  regarding their suitability for admission to the courses applied.

Selection Process
  1. All the applications will be received by the Controller of Examinations/Academic Section office.
  2. The applications will then be transmitted to the Office of International Affairs for initial scrutiny and onward transmission to Departments/Centres/Schools. The Admissions Committee of the School/Department/Centre concerned will do the final scrutiny and assess the student’s suitability for admission.
  3. The recommendation of the Admissions Committee will be forwarded through the Office of International Affairs to the Vice-Chancellor for approval.
  4. Intimation of admission will be sent to the selected candidates by the office of the Director, International Affairs of the University.

However, candidates sponsored by agencies like ICCR should send the application through the sponsored agencies, which has to forward the application to the Controller of Examination’s office by the specified deadline.  

Visa & Health Insurance

Visa:
A candidate selected for admission is given provisional intimation of admission, which can be used by the candidate to obtain VISA from his/her local Indian Consulate. It is essential that a Ph.D. student should obtain a “Research VISA” and other students a “Student VISA”. Prospective applicants for Research VISA needs to submit to the Consulate a research proposal along with University’s provisional acceptance of affiliation. 

IMPORTANT NOTE: No foreign national will be admitted without a student visa. 

Foreign nationals selected for Ph.D. programmes will be allowed to complete the admission only after obtaining a Research Visa from the Indian Embassy abroad. 

Health Insurance:
All the prospective students are required to buy an appropriate health insurance policy before arriving inIndia. It is essential that the student’s health insurance policy remains valid throughout the period of the student’s stay in this University. This will be checked at the time of admission. 

Documents Required

A student selected for admission is required to report to P.A. to Director, International Affairs, South Campus, SIP Building, University of Hyderabad, with the following documents, in original, along with one photocopy of each document. Certified English translation of such copies should also be submitted if they are in a different language. 

    (a) All the certificates and transcripts in different examinations,
    (b) Passport and VISA,
    (c) Medical fitness certificate from a recognized hospital,
    (d) Health Insurance policy.

Besides the above, the student is also required to pay the fee prescribed for International students. The present fee structure can be found in the prospectus which is on the University website.  The University reserves the right to change fee structure without notice.

Accommodation

If requested, hostel accommodation may be provided at various Men’s and Ladies’ Hostels of the University campus, subject to availability, as per university norms.  

Registration with FRRO

Under the Registration of Foreigners Rules 1939, every foreigner who is in India, for stay in excess of (90) ninety days (for purpose of other than tourism) is required to register himself/herself within (14) fourteen days of arrival in India with the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer in the place of ordinary residence and declare his/her registered address.

The FRRO office is about 35 kms from the campus of the University.  The office of the Director, International Affairs, will assist the students in preparing necessary documents for the purpose.
