Innovations:
Dr. Vijay Kanawade and Mr Mathew Sebastian
Dr. Vijay Kanawade and Mr Mathew Sebastian from the Centre for Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences measured neutral sub-3nm particle concentrations at an urban location in India and reported the formation rate of small molecular clusters, for the first time, in sub-3nm size regime, where aerosol nucleation triggers. The researchers have used AIRMODUS nano Condensation Nucleus Counter (nCNC) to measure particle size distribution in the size range of 1 to 3 nm diameter since January 2019 at the University of Hyderabad campus site. Dr. Jeff Pierce from Colorado State University, USA was also part of this study. Their findings published in the journal ‘Atmospheric Environment’ showed that a pool of sub-3nm particles is often present in the atmosphere, but how fast these clusters grow depends on various factors, June 14, 2021
In a breakthrough discovery a research team led by Dr. Akash Gulyani from Department of Biochemistry, School of Life Sciences showed that an eye-independent system (extraocular) lining the periphery of the worm’s body allows even a headless flatworm to move like an intact worm with incredible coordination, June 21, 2021.
A research team led by Prof. Appa Rao Podile, Department of Plant Sciences, in a three-year collaboration with two groups in the United Kingdom (Prof. Philip Poole’s group at the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Oxford, and Dr. Andrew Neal at Rothamsted Research) has made a major breakthrough in plant symbiosis studies. Plant symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing soil bacteria (rhizobia) is a key to sustainable agriculture. Pulses and other legumes develop complex symbiotic associations with rhizobia at root nodules—rhizobia ‘fix’ and supply nitrogen to the host plants; plants, in return, provide carbon and energy, June 23, 2021.
A team led by Dr. Rahul Kumar and involving both material scientists and plant biologists from the University of Hyderabad (UoH) and International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI), first developed an industrially viable dry method to generate chemically stable and ~5000 times smaller nano-diammonium phosphate (n-DAP) fertilizer. Subsequent testing of both types of fertilizers on tomato and wheat seedlings demonstrated an extraordinary superiority of nano-DAP fertilizer over the conventional granular DAP (c-DAP). By testing four different procedures for the nano-DAP dispersal, the team even recommends the best method of its application. In the lab-scale experiments, the reduced quantity of nano-DAP fertilizer input than c-DAP promoted the early seedlings growth and development in both crops. It also led to enhanced phosphate uptake efficiency in these seedlings, July 03, 2021.
A team of researchers headed by Dr. Nooruddin Khan, an Associate Professor at the Department of Animal Biology, School of Life Sciences, University of Hyderabad, have identified novel metabolic pathway-based adjuvants that enhance the efficacy of Dengue Vaccine candidate (EDIII) by improving immunological memory and production of neutralizing antibodies which is capable of neutralizing all the serotypes of Dengue Virus effectively, July 12, 2021.
