Facilities and Services

Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Library

The IGM Library is one of the main central facilities of the University, serving the information needs of faculty, research scholars and students in the arts, humanities, social sciences, management, sciences and engineering. The building was inaugurated on 21 October 1988 by the then Vice-President of India, the late Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, and named after the late Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi. Its aim is to be the most effective learning resource centre contributing to the quality of higher education, with an Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) search area and a laptop zone with Wi-Fi.

With its IT infrastructure, the library has achieved several distinctions in the country. It was the first university library in India

  • to fully automate all its housekeeping operations;
  • to undertake turnkey projects for computerising other libraries and providing network facilities, at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University and the City Central Library (City Grandhalaya Samstha, Ashok Nagar), Hyderabad;
  • to offer a one-year Post Graduate Diploma in Library Automation and Networking (PGDLAN) in distance mode (from 1998), with emphasis on practice and projects;
  • to subscribe to online search databases (from 1998) and full-text databases (from 2001);
  • to become a governing-body member of OCLC (WorldCat);
  • to install an electronic surveillance and security system.

The National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) has recognised the IGM Library as its Regional Library for the South Zone since 1993, providing resources to mathematics and statistics faculty and research scholars.

Computer Centre and Campus Network

The Computer Centre supports the teaching and research goals of the University by delivering IT and IT-enabled services to faculty, staff and students. Its internet services began in 1993 with a 9.6 kbps VSAT link from ERNET. It supports teaching, administration, finance, recruitment, academic and examination work and e-governance; runs ICT awareness and literacy courses and provides resource persons for ICT-related courses in the Schools, Departments and Centres; develops and administers the University website; and maintains the University database servers.

University Hostels

The University has 23 hostels accommodating over 5000 men and women students, set in lush greenery on a pollution-free campus in both the North and South campuses, so that students live near their departments. Priority is given to students from distant places; hostel accommodation is not provided to students living within the municipal limits of Hyderabad–Secunderabad, and allotment follows the reservation procedure under University norms. Nine hostels have dining facilities. The hostels are administered by a Chief Warden and Deputy Chief Wardens, with one or two Wardens for each hostel.

The Tagore International Guest House on the South Campus is reserved for international students and scholars.

Sports

The main sports complex has a full-size cricket pavilion, a 400-metre running track, kho-kho, a volleyball court, an open karate dojo, an indoor stadium with four Yonex synthetic badminton courts under LED lighting, a 4000 sq ft fitness centre with modern equipment, and a 4000 sq ft indoor hall for table tennis, carrom and chess. A second complex has a grass football field, two synthetic tennis courts, a basketball court, a 2000 sq ft fitness centre exclusively for women, and a yoga centre with regular classes under yoga instructors. The South Campus complex has two synthetic volleyball courts and a floodlit basketball court.

All facilities are free of cost for the University community and are open on Saturdays and Sundays (except closed public holidays). The University regularly sends teams to inter-university tournaments and competitions.

Health Centre

The Health Centre provides comprehensive primary health care and emergency medical services 24×7, all year round, to about 18,000 people: students, employees and their dependents, retired employees, and the many others who work on campus. The Out-Patient Department (OPD) is open from 9.00 am to 5.30 pm on University working days, and doctors are on call on holidays.
