Eligibility
- Admission in absentia
- The University may consider foreign nationals for admission “in absentia”, at their request. Admission under the 15% bracket for international students, to any programme, is subject to the candidate being found suitable by the Admissions Committee of the Centre / Department / School.
- Academic qualification
- A foreign national must meet the same eligibility conditions as Indian students, including the qualifying degree and marks/grades prescribed in the prospectus. Where a student’s parent university has no programme equivalent to the minimum eligibility, an equivalent programme may be considered; the Admissions Committee’s decision on this is final.
- English proficiency
- Proficiency in English is a precondition for admission. Every foreign national must submit one of the following scores, not older than two years: IELTS (Academic) 6.5 or above; or TOEFL — paper-based 560, computer-based 220 or internet-based 80 or above.
Please note
NRIs holding an Indian passport are Indian nationals and cannot be considered as international students. Foreign nationals whose qualifying degree is from India and who live in India at the time of application must take part in the entrance examination, in the form of an interview at the University, as prescribed by the Centre / Department / School.
Visa
A selected candidate receives a provisional intimation of admission, which is used to obtain a visa from the local Indian consulate. PhD students must obtain a Research Visa and all other students a Student Visa. Applicants for a Research Visa submit to the consulate a research proposal together with the University’s provisional acceptance of affiliation.
Important
No foreign national will be admitted without a student visa. Foreign nationals selected for PhD programmes can complete their admission only after obtaining a Research Visa from the Indian Embassy abroad.
Health insurance
All students must buy an appropriate health insurance policy before arriving in India and keep it valid throughout their stay at the University. This is checked at the time of admission.
Accommodation
On request, hostel accommodation may be provided in the men’s and women’s hostels on campus or in the Tagore International Guest House, subject to availability and as per University norms.
Registration with the FRRO
Under the Registration of Foreigners Rules, 1939, every foreigner staying in India for more than 90 days (for a purpose other than tourism) must register within 14 days of arrival with the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO) of the place of ordinary residence, and declare their registered address. The Office for International Affairs helps students prepare the documents.
